I think the value of gems comes from their rarity. I am against possibility of crafting them. You can already salvage them from some items, djinn essences and they drop once a while (I got some from HM elementals and some from FOW monsters).

Really? I think of all the time i've farmed those elementals, I had MAYBE 2 drop for me total. I think I have made more money off Gold drops, and granite to trader. Especially now as Granite remains high in price.

Somebody had better be farming gems, since traders only sell what they buy from players. If everyone only farmed gold and bought gems, the trader would soon have no gems available at any price.

That's what the trade contracts are for. The traders that give you gems for those always have a supply, regardless of how many people buy and sell using the materials traders. Doing the quests for those contracts (and buying them) is a variety of farming. As long as they continue to drop as loot, too, there will always be a supply regardless of how often they drop.

Trade. Contracts. Why people are bothering to farm gems, I can't imagine.

7 contracts per gem, limited amount of quests that give trade contracts....you can get what, 5 gems per character from farming quests? Buying from players is a good idea but most know the value of them and it's not economically feasible.
They also drop occasionally from hidden treasures in dungeons, random drops from EVERYTHING..(as above some places have higher drop rates than others, such as FoW and UW, another source for my gems)....
They're not as rare as ecto, but you can farm ecto, you can't farm gems specifically because they're just a rare chance of dropping from anything.
You can also farm geodes, ruby/sapphire djinn essences, ruby maul/dagger, jeweled daggers. Farm vabbi...why do you think Vabbian armor uses gems anyway?

I think the idea with gems is that Anet wants to make them realworld-linked. In reality you can't just go out there and dig up gems, and I think it's the same thing in GW.
But A11, if Vabbian doesn't use gems as a rare material, then what material do you propose? Ectos had been taken and the rest is relatively cheap to get.(not including gems, never bother to hoard them)

Why does everything have to be directly farmable? Last I checked almost anything can drop gold or merchant food... if you spend time farming areas with above average gem drop rates (or anywhere) you'll make enough gold to buy several of them from the trader (or someone selling) in the time it takes to see one drop directly. You might even get something else valuable along the way. Farming gold is really just 2 or 3 mouse clicks removed from farming [insert item of choice]. Is it really that much of a hassle especially now that these items cost only a fraction of what they once did?
